it is from a greek word which means "aspersion" in a figurative manner. the scripture it is from in 1 peter 1:2 is stating that peter was addressing those who were the elect or chosen of God, who had been sanctified or cleansed and set apart and made holy by the Holy Spirit which made them obedient to the word of God and covered by the blood of Jesus which was shed for them.
