Is there is no such thing as a true Christian?

This ties into my last question. I ask what a true Christian was and (of course), the answers I got were very jumbled. A lot of the Christians said that you supposed to lead a pure Christian life, but then also said that no one is perfect. They said it was more than believing in Jesus and yet, it was necessary to believe in him to go to heaven. So, if faith and "good" works get you in heaven, but at the same time you are supposed to do good works without expecting reward, then how can anyone call themselves true Christians? Is there such a thing ?
